Each of these books rightly focuses prayer on the One who receives glory in our praying. Unfortunately, I felt Shirer spent so much time focusing on Satan that one may find it easy to begin to think prayer is about nothing more than thwarting his plans. Also, I fear Shirer's exposition of Scripture is not always accurate, so in stark contrast to the above mentioned books that focus on praying the Word, Shirer often lifts a verse or biblical illustration to fit one of her prayer strategies and "claims" it as a stake we can drive into the ground in our prayers against Satan's attacks.
Personally, I don't love Shirer's writing style where sometimes cheesy extended metaphors are employed unnecessarily as is the. Use. Of. The. Period. That's simply a personal preference as I know others find her writing style engaging, accessible, and enjoyable.
I fear the raving reviews of this book highlight American Christian women's consumerism...that if someone puts out a "Christian" movie and our Christian bookstores promote her book, it quickly becomes a bestseller. That's not to discount that some women have found this book helpful. Praise the Lord He uses imperfect authors, imperfect publishers, imperfect bestsellers, and believe it or not, our sovereign God can even use imperfect exposition and is not bound by human error! What a short list we would have to choose from if perfection were a qualification for publishing. Yet in all things we must practice discernment. My prayer is this: That we would love the Lord with all our hearts, souls, MINDS, and strength...growing in discernment and wisdom to know what His good, pleasing, and perfect will is...
...moreThe opening of the book sets the stage so you will have no doubt about what is expected. Here's the opening paragraph to prove what I'm saying:
If you have seen the movie War Room and are longing to implement what you saw on the screen through Priscilla Shirer's character then you need this book. I loved the movie but this book just takes it over the top. If you've ever experienced a Bible study by Priscilla you already know what I mean. If not let me give you a little glimpse of what is to come. The opening of the book sets the stage so you will have no doubt about what is expected. Here's the opening paragraph to prove what I'm saying:
"Just so you know what you're getting into . . .
By the time you've finished reading (and working) through this book, the front cover shouldn't be able to close neatly back over on itself. It should be noticeably disfigured. Ski-ramping up from the spine at such a scooped angle that even if you laid an old-school telephone book on top, you still couldn't smooth out what's become so harshly, permanently misshapen. From heartfelt use. War torn. An impossible option for regifting at Christmastime." (pg. 1)
Now that's the type of study I'm interested in. One that compels me to dive in and dig deep. One that I beg the Lord to ingrain upon my being. This study is all of that and more.
You'll be walked through the process of beginning a plan to commit your life to prayer, for yourself and those around you. Once you've reached the end I think you'll feel empowered to take on the difficult situations in your life on your knees.
This is one of those books that if I were independently wealthy I'd buy by the caseload and hand it out to my loved ones. (And probably total strangers as well!) If you are looking for a way to take your prayer life to the next meaningful level get yourself a copy of this book.

Before I go into what I like about this book, I want to express my concerns. Shirer is passionate about prayer and how as Christians we can underestimate what Satan can do. I do not dispute that, however, it can be too easy to say The devil made me do it. I don't think that is what she is saying because her book is all about strategy It can be easy for us to lose sight on the purpose of prayer when we talk about strategy. Is what she saying something to look at. Yes! It is an expose of how we can lose our will to pray. It is emphasis on Satan's strategy (all ten of them is at the start of each chapter and what the enemy will do to keep you away from prayer) however, I prefer and I think it is needed that we do not underestimate what GOD can do and who HE is. This study is more pragmatic and the problem I have with pragmatic is if I don't follow along, I am sunk or if I do follow along but God does not deliver, then what happens to my faith. These are things we must think about as we read books that help with our prayer life or anything else with the Christian life. Pragmatism always leads us to doing while God is saying KNOW ME. Come to the desert to know me and worship me. Ultimately that is what prayer offers us. To know HIM as we pray his word and to worship Him as we know his peace.
What this book did do for me is it helped me get to the root of my lack of prayer. Many times we know our walk is not right and a book like this can help us identify our sin. Each 10 chapters close with a handful scripture to fight and to replace what we are thinking. It reminds us of the truth.
My concerns aside, I appreciate being reminded what hinders me from knowing how great our God is.

...moreHave you been feeling defeated, discouraged, down? Does life seem hopeless, fearful, and depressing? Do your past sins continue to bring guilt and shame even though you know you have been forgiven? Is your marriage a battle zone in itself? Are your children or grandchildren wayward, living the life of the prodigal? God is calling you to War!! Not with earthly weapons of words, backbiting, bitterness, anger, or strife, but with heavenly weapons that tear down strongholds, take thoughts captive and are able to defeat all the fiery darts of the evil one. He is calling you to leave a legacy of answered prayers for your children and generations to come to witness. He is calling you to PRAYER!
This book will encourage your spirit, teach you new strategies for battling the enemy, and help you overcome even your weakest points. What will you be praying about? Your identity, your fears, your purity, your marriage, your children, and other areas of life you may struggle with. Priscilla surveyed a panel of women and asked what areas of life they felt defeated in. She took the top ten and used them as a jumping off point. But you don't have to stop there. It's just a starting point. Once you have learned to successfully strategize your prayer life - you will be off and running. Prayer will be a constant part of your day, and you will see GOD do miracles! We still serve that kind of GOD! Get started today!!

Fervent lacks focus. The author touches on so many different topics that she wasn't able to dig deeply into any one of them. The book reads like a very passionate sermon – a lot of screaming and calls to defeat the devil – without actually saying anything. Not to mention, the majority of the text wasn't even about prayer!
Shirer's focus on Satan (rather than Jesus) was disconcerting. The book is littered with talk about us "hitting the devil where it hurts." At one point, she states, "The enemy's going to hate this. Let's do it..." (p. 146) I guess I'd rather do something out of obedience to God, motivated by His love.
She gathers verses at the end of each chapter that supposedly correlate with the chapter's theme – taking many of them out of context in order to make them "fit."
She also seemed to assume that every Christian's struggles are the exact same as hers. For example, in chapter 8, "Your Pressures," she mostly focuses on the problem with busyness and barely gives laziness a passing nod.
There are just a few personal anecdotes included; however, she is so vague in her descriptions that they don't add anything to the book. If an author doesn't want to be vulnerable, that's fine, but then she shouldn't pretend to be! I would have liked to read anecdotes from others, as well.
And one of my biggest beefs with this book (I know, "There's more?!") is her idolization of the nuclear family. In chapter 4, "Your Family," she insinuates that the best thing a Christian can do to fight against Satan is to "marry and raise up a whole other generation of little Christ followers." (p. 81) She contrasted this to other forms of ministry.
As a single, childless Christian, I balk at that. It's unbiblical! Raising children up who love Christ is absolutely a worthwhile endeavor, but it is not superior to any other endeavors God calls Christians to. As Stanley Haurwas said in After Christendom, "Singleness reminds the Church we grow not through biological ascription but through witness and hospitality to the stranger."
She also spends time encouraging the single woman to pray for her future mate "before [she] even knows his first name." (p. 84) Considering that God never promised marriage to anyone, I wish she had spent a lot more time encouraging all believers, regardless of marital status, to pray for each other as family.
The Body of Christ is our true family! I want to be clear, I don't think it's wrong to pray for earthly family if you have them – of course it's not. But instead of praying for a "future" spouse (who may or may not exist), pray for the people who are real and in your life right now. (To me, the concept of praying for a future spouse is a little like praying for wisdom on how to spend the $300 million you might win in the lottery next week, instead of praying for wisdom on how to spend the money you already have.)
There are so many other books on prayer that have been written – I would recommend that readers find a classic work on prayer that has been tried and tested. Fervent deserves to be skipped!

After completing the Armor of God study by Priscilla Shirer a couple years ago I knew I wanted to pick up Fervent. In many ways, this book was an echo of Armor of God, with many of the same topics and stories. Nonetheless, it was a great refresher and I benefitted in many ways from reading this. I have started writing my prayers down since I started reading and have already noticed a difference in my life. Prayer is something I have always struggled with because I find my mind wandering as I pray. Writing my thoughts down helps my focus and actually allows me to pray for all of the things I want to, without getting sidetracked.
I enjoyed the format of this book as well. The chapters were the perfect length for me to read a couple each morning and have the book on my mind all day. I liked the addition of relevant verses at the end of each chapter, mixing Priscilla's thoughts with the facts in the Word. Overall, this was a beneficial read! I trust Priscilla Shirer's books to bring me out of a Spiritual slump and help to get me back on track and in touch with God.

Thai book was written after the movie, "War Room!" The author played an important part in the movie and she is also a well known Christian speaker, and daughter of the Pastor Tony Evans. Even though this book is written for women, I think it is an encouragement and challenge to all who read it. Many wonderful principles taught in this book! I trust the quotes below will be a blessing to you:Not everything good thing is a God thing. ~Priscilla Shirer

God doesn't want something from you. He wants something for you. Your value is not in what you do (as if you could ever do enough) but in who you are (as if you could ever be more loved and accepted by Him than you already are). ~Priscilla Shirer
Easy not to notice how every time Moses approached Pharaoh throughout the early part of Exodus, declaring God's Words to the Egyptian ruler, he didn't just say, "Let My people go," like the lyrics to the old spiritual says. He said, "Let My people do, so that they may serve Me (Ex. 9:1). Said it about a dozen times. Look it up. There was a specific reason for their release. ~Priscilla Shirer
This one life is all we've got. This one pass through the gauntlet of life's pressures and demands is our one chance to choose: Will we let them dominate and define us? Steal our hearts and devotion? Or will our service and adoration of the Father determine how we operate – determine what fills our plate? ~Priscilla Shirer

...moreOriginal review: One my goals for the year is to read more on prayer, and I was inspired to pick up this hook after seeing War Room. Priscilla Shirer writes in such an engaging way - it felt like a light read because it was easy to get through, but this book is full of convicting encouragement toward prayer. The focus of the book is spiritual warfare and the different ways that Satan may try to attack Christians, with encouragement to fight back with prayer. It comes with prayer cards that you can use to write out prayers for yourself and family members, truly making this book a "game plan" tool for honing a prayer strategy. I definitely enjoyed it and will probably read through different sections again when they are particularly relevant to my life!

I did not enjoy this book as much as I thought I would. The author doesn't seem very knowledgeable about theology or the proper way to interpret Scripture. I lost confidence in their opinion pretty quickly. Some of the points are really good, but others are a bit of a stretch and don't quite line up with Biblical theology. The author emphasizes spiritual warfare and the devil's schemes a little too much. I would have preferred more emphasis on Christ's power and the sweet restfulness of prayer, rather than Satan's "reign of terror" and how we need to fight back.
I'm not impressed with this author's writing style. Some of the metaphors were too complicated, and the writing uses fragments of sentences. Punctuation is scattered around randomly to indicate pauses in the flow words, but the correct punctuation isn't used. It's a very conversational style, instead of a writing style. It reads like a phone call, instead of a book. Maybe that was the style the author wanted, but it didn't appeal to me.

I read War Room (a novelization of the movie) starring Priscilla. I'm in the middle of doing her new study titled The Armor of God, now. I felt that Fervent was a great resource that could be a practical in-depth guide to prayer. Fervent is what I expected and more. It's an eye-opener in reference to the battles being waged against us daily.

"Fervent is a hands-on, knee-down, never-give-up action guide to practical, purpose praying." I agree.I read War Room (a novelization of the movie) starring Priscilla. Fervent is what I expected and more. It's an eye-opener in reference to the battles being waged against us daily.
Priscilla states, "…this is war. The fight of your life. A very real enemy has been strategizing and scheming against you, assaulting you, coming after your emotions, your mind, your man, your children, your future…his reign of terror stops here. Stops now." She proceeds to tell readers how recognize attacks and how to come against them.
This author gives readers a hands on guide in how to pray and fight the good fight. I liked how this author opens up the book sharing her personal prayer journey handed down to her by her grandmother. She has readers look at 10 strategies the enemy uses against us and how to pray in that situation.
The strategies are
1. Against your Passion,
2. Against your focus,
3. Against your identity,
4. Against your family
5. Against your confidence,
6. Against your calling,
7. Against your Purity
8. Against your rest and contentment
9. Against your heart and
10.Against your relationships.
These are just a few of the ways the enemy wants to take us out. I liked how she explained these; gave a personal example from her life where this situation came into play and many scripture references to help the reader personalize our prayers.
This author includes Prayer cards for the reader to use. They are to be ripped out of the book and placed in an area where it can be seen often. This is to remind you how to pray and of God's promise.
This author states, "Make prayer both your lifeline and your lifestyle. Continue to write his word on your heart, on your hand, on these little pieces of paper I've given you. Something highly important and powerful happens when you put these prayers of yours and these promises of His into words. And into action. It's a daily fight – expect your fervency to lead you to a place of rest. Because God is the one who's fighting for you and He will surely prevail."
This book gave me an insight into prayer I didn't have before and has helped me take my prayer life to a whole new level. I'm inspired and encouraged! I can't wait to see the movie.

This book is different from just about any other one I have ever encountered. It is designed to be used and lived, not just read. There is so much to digest, so be sure to allow ample time when working through the chapters. It is not a theological discussion, but a hands-on resource. It is well-organized, easy to follow, and thought-provoking. It is so relatable, particularly as Shirer includes a number of personal stories. The enemy is set on destroying us, but we don't have to allow it.As Shirer points out, a main purpose of her book is to get God's fence of protection around us, and learning the correct way to pray, specifically with precision, is key. Prayer is the fuel that drives everything, and the enemy is out to hit us hardest in the following areas: our passion, focus, identity, family, confidence, calling, purity, rest and contentment, heart, and relationships. Shirer points out that these are the areas we need to focus on. She encourages the reader to write out prayers, and there are perforated prayer strategy pages at the end of the book for this purpose. "You write out your prayers so you 'won't forget'… won't forget who the real enemy is, won't forget the One in whom your hope lies, won't forget your real need and dependencies, and, later, won't forget the record of how God responds." The latter can be noted in a prayer journal.
When we pray, it should include praise, repentance, and asking. I love the one acronym she uses in the book:
Prayer Releases All Your Eternal Resources
Each chapter ends with biblical passages and promises that can be used to create specific prayers for each of the ten areas listed above. Fervent prayer needs to be focused!
While there are a number of wonderful reminders in this book, one of my favorites is: "These areas of greatest fear and anxiety in your life are clues to some important spiritual information. They reveal… that a personalized strategy has been insidiously put in place to destroy your vibrancy and render you defeated." We are truly in a battle, but it is not one we have to lose. By following the strategies outlined by Shirer, the reader will be better prepared for battle, complete with the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, and the shoes of peace (the full armor of God, as mentioned in Eph. 6:10-17). So, grab your notebook and pen and dig in!

I wish I had more than 5 stars to give this book! Marking it 'done' is not entirely accurate, because for at least the forseeable future, this book will remain close by so I can read and re-read it as often as necessary. If you are looking for a book ABOUT prayer...this is not your book. She says so in the very first chapter and she meant it. This book takes a hard look at the areas of our lives (10 of them to be specific) where the enemy is most likely to be watching, waiting, and formulating his attack strategy against us.
What this book does, is equips the reader to formulate a strategy, through specific, targeted prayer that allows the believer to strike back. Hard.
I've read many books about prayer, but this one changed my prayer life forever. I could tell you how it changed, and what I'm doing differently, but that could take away from what the book might show someone else, and that's the point of the book. Though we are all targeted by the same enemy, his attacks are very specialized, and they are customized for every individual. That means we must individually develop a personal strategy to fight back. What I fight back with might not be effective for someone else, and vice versa.
I will say that one thing that permanently changed for me - the way I document my prayers. The book encourages the reader to write out their prayers so they won't forget, and it has made a huge difference in the way I pray. Again, tools are given to help the reader figure out what that looks like in their life, but the principle of writing things down so we won't forget is critical.
My favorite quote from the entire book (and I have a lot of favorites) is:
"If all we're doing is flinging words and emotions in all directions without any real consideration for the specific ways the enemy is targeting us and the promises of God that apply to us, we're mostly just wasting our time. We're adding to the confusion while not really making a noticeable dent in the problem or the process."
Five huge stars, and I recommend this book to every Christ Follower. Even if you think you already have a vibrant, powerful prayer life, this book will make it stronger.
